Important Exchanges

Whenever a motorist is involved in an accident, he or she should be sure to exchange all pertinent information with the other driver. This means getting the full name, address, phone numbers, birth date, car description and all insurance information pertaining to the other driver. Aside from scrutinizing this information carefully, witnesses should be asked to give their accounts of the accident. This thorough approach negates any possibility that the other driver might engage in the unscrupulous ploy of assessing the damages and saying that it is not worth worrying about. Those who fall for this line may later find that the accident was reported to the police and that other driver claimed that damages was done to his or her car for which he or she is not at fault.

One of the best practices is to contact the police as soon as the accident happens. If you have any injuries, make sure that you tell the police. If you believe your injuries are serious, have the policeman call an ambulance and avoid trying to get to the hospital yourself. If injured, make sure that the policeman knows who the witnesses are so that they can interview them and find out what they know.
